Well, it's me, me, me! I can tell all the lies I want because sadly, everybody that was there with me during our chilhood are gone now. My kids can complain about me to their hearts content when I'M gone, but, not now! Haha. Most of my story you already know by reading the biographies of my family on this site. At least you know about my pre-adolescence but now for the full adolescence. When we were out at Maryville, we were not sinners. Oh, we gossiped and fought and were somewhat mean at times. The worse thing we ever did was look up dirty words in the dictionary and say out loud all the swear words we knew. We hadn't heard of the "F" word yet. My sister once called a nun a "f****** a******" but even she didn't know what that meant. Before I go back to my adolescent days, I must tell you of a couple of events that happened at Maryville When I arrived, I was almost seven. Back then, kids made their first Communion when they were six. FIrst Communion is a big deal in the Catholic Church. The school decided that any one who hadn't made their communion yet would make it in December. I was the only one. When the day came they held a celebratory mass..with nice yellow vestments for the priests, alter boys lit candles, the organ boomed, the choir (along with everybody in chapel) stood and belted out the First Communion Song while I walked down the aisle in my white communion dress and veil by myself! Afterwards, when everybody got the same old "slop", I got bacon and eggs and a cinnamon bun. It was the best day with a bad ending .. as you would have read in David's biography.

She had beautiful auburn hair, thick and shiny. My dad suspected the milkman. Ruthie was the glue who held us together - until later that is. She was a tom boy who hung out with her brother Joey, until I came along. Then I think she divided her time between Joey and me. She liked to play "boys chase the girls" and when the boys caught her, they'd stick her in one of those vegetable crates with a wire twist on the outside and she'd have to try to free herself (which she probably did) . I wasn't too thrilled with the game and wouldn't play until one day she convinced me to try it. I did. I was caught. I was stuck in the vegetable crate. I think I found it somewhat fun. She was the one who let me out, I'm sure. I can't remember if I screamed or cried, I just know that I never played "boys chase the girls" again. When David came along he preferred to hang with me because he said she talked too much and that "Christine just knows things". But she bullied her way into his life and thence he had one big mother and two little ones. Because we were girls and close in age, whatever our mother bought for one, she had to buy for the other or WATCH OUT! Ruthie harangued our mother for days and weeks (and possibly months) to buy her a pair of penny loafers (I could have cared less). Then one day Mom said she was going shopping for penny loafers. Ruthie was so excited, she couldn't sit still with anticipation . Mom came home and handed us each a shoe box. I opened mine and there was a pair of brown loafers with a shiny penny in each little pocket on the front of each shoe. When Ruthie opened hers, well...... Hell hath no fury like a little girl who didn't get what she wanted. Her new shoes went flying through the kitchen, the living room, the screen door out and over the back porch railing and in our back yard. Mom's mouth hung open, my mouth hung open. I offered to trade shoes with her but that wasn't possible. By this time in our lives I had outgrown her and my feet were too big.. She was the littlest angel in the Christmas pageant?? Huh? Everyone (even my grandmother!) thought she should have been the littlest devil. Sometimes Mom went shopping and left us to fend for herself which wasn't unusual for the time (who wants to cart around four kids all running in different directions?). We had explicit instructions about what and what not to do and mostly obeyed. One day, I came into the kitchen when I saw Ruthie standing over the kitchen sink staring with fascination at something near the drain. She said "watch this" and went to the ice box and came back with an egg. She cracked it open as we watched it slither down to the drain where it sat in all its slimy glory. Of course, I had to try it and she went and got another egg and said "one more and that's all". Dear readers, you know where this is going, right? When Mom came home, there was a dozen eggs wobbling happily in the kitchen sink. She was not amused.

Nancy was my mother. I don't know much about her life before i was born because we were seperated from our family when we were quite young . Her children were 4, 6, 8 and when the separation occurred. The four of us loved her unconditionally and the series of events that caused this tragedy would not have happened today.

Joseph A Kahn Sr
Joe was my oldest brother. He was a quiet, serious fellow. As children he was not that close to David and me because of the age difference. He was very close to my older sibling Ruthie, they were sixteen months apart. It wasn't until we were young adults that Ii realized how fond of his family he really was. My mother used say that we were "four of us against the world". He was very handsome - black hair, blue eyes and had no trouble finding girls. He was once voted "Greek God of South Shore" He and his friends did very funny amusing things like breaking into the stables at South Shore Country Club, riding the horses out the front gates and down 71st street. South Shore is a lakefront neighborhood on Chicago's south side just south of Hyde Park. All of us stayed there until we reached adulthood. Joe was a troubled adolescent who was always looking for his mother. He found her after nine years had gone by at 63rd and Stoney Island. When we reconnected, it was unreal. I had already mourned her when I was six or seven so it was hard to recognize her as our mother. He got into trouble with the law and spent some time at "Sheridan" near Utica , Illinois which was kind of a prison for boys who committed some serious crime - I don't remember what he did, but it wasn't that bad. He Married Suzanne Angelis around 1965 and moved to California where he lived for about 15 years. He came back to Chicago around 1979 after he and Suzanne were divorced. Joe would bring their son to Chicago in the summer. Suzanne remarried and moved to North Carolina, divorced and also moved back to Illinois. Their son, Joey stayed in North Carolina and later joined the Air Force.. When Joe came back, our family was complete!. Together again, we had the time of our lives. Tramping in the woods, starved Rock, Apple Picking, snowball fights. When the Ortiz Family- some from California piled into Ruthie's house, Joe's son was included in all the mayhem. He was a father figure to Gregory and an Uncle to my kids.

Joe was a quiet, serious boy. He was very close to Ruthie as a child but not so much with David and me. It wasn't until we were young adults that I found that he had a great fondness for his family and that included the nieces and nephew.
