Helen met Clark Twelvetrees shortly after she enrolled in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Helen said in an interview with Hollywood journalist Wood Soanes in 1932 that she spent three months at the Academy before joining Walker's Troupe where "It was in his company that I met Clark Twelvetrees and married him without consulting my family. We had known each other two entire weeks."
Their marriage ended in little more than three years as Clark was known to be a heavy drinker, and according to Helen, physically abusive. An interesting article written in 1927 about Clark jumping out of a Manhattan window after evidently drinking is included down below on this page.
