Don, after a brief battle with cancer, passed away in the early hours of Sunday April 22, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, and his special little pug Elmo. He was predeceased by his parents Brent and Norah Withers, and brother Brian Withers. He leaves behind his Mother & Father-in-law, Bruce and June Alsbury; his sister-in-law Carol (Mark) Siemens and nieces Allison (Andrew) Spear and Jennifer Siemens; Ann Klassen & nephews Tyler Klassen (Carlie) and Kelly Klassen and fiancé Gail Schultze; brother-in-law Michael Alsbury and nephew Morgan Alsbury. Don was born in Prince Rupert, later moving to Nanaimo and then Prince George. He worked for Prince George Pulp & Paper for a few years. He then started a business, Kanaka Seafoods, 35 years ago, and was a well-liked and respected supplier to many local customers and still retained some customers up until his death. Don also leaves behind his very special buddies Darcy Nichol,Lawrence Rempel, Craig Stenerson and Don Dellaire.

The partially-decomposed body of a Herndon, Va, refuse collector was found shortly after noon yesterday in his car parked near the intersection of Routes 7 and 28 at Dranesville, Fairfax County police reported.
Police identified the man as Caskie Withers, about 40, of Route 2, Sterling, in neighboring Loudoun County.
Police Lt. James W. Maley said the death appeared to be by natural causes and that no foul play is suspected. An autopsy is to be performed, he said. Herndon town police received a missing person's report on Withers Monday, county police said. He was found sitting behind the wheel in his compact car which was parked along with other autos on the site of a demolished service station.

US Senator. During his life time he was a physician, military officer, newspaperman, politician, and diplomat. As a youth he attended private schools and earned his doctors medical degree at University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1841 while only 20 years old. He established his practice in Campbell County and in 1858 he moved to Danville, Virginia. When the Civil War started he entered the Confederate Army as the major of 18th Virginia Infantry. He was promoted to colonel and commanded the regiment until debilitating wounds forced his retirement. He was then appointed to an administrative position as commander of the military post at Danville and remained as such until the end of the war. After the war he returned to Lynchburg and established a daily newspaper, the Lynchburg News. He was nominated by the Conservative Party for governor, but withdrew from the race. He was elected lieutenant governor as a democrat in 1873 and to the US Congress in 1874. He lost the 1880 bid for reelection to former Civil War general William Mahone of the Readjuster Party. President Grover Cleveland appointed him as consul at Hong Kong in 1885 and he retired in 1889 to Wytheville, Virginia where he remained until his death. (bio by: Tom Todd)
