2020 marks 20 years since the inception of AncientFaces. We are the same team who began this community so long ago. Over the years it feels, at least to us, that our family has expanded to include so many. Thank you!

Auguste Jules Luck
was a friend of the Hon. David Wynford Carnegie, youngest son of the Sixth Earl of Southesk was an explorer and gold prospector in Western Australia . In 1893 Carnegies friend, Lord Percy Douglas, was appointed a director of a new mining exploration company, thus securing finances for Carnegies prospecting. In March 1894 Carnegie commenced his first prospecting expedition, in the company of a prospector and camel handler named Gus Luck, an Alsatian. He learned much bushcraft from Gus Luck. Between March 1894 and March 1895 they made two commissioned prospecting expeditions for the Hampton Plains Pastoral Co. The pair initially explored the Hampton Plains immediately east of Kalgoorlie, but finding it extremely dry, they travelled instead to the Queen Victoria Springs, about 250 km (150 miles) east of Kalgoorlie. From there they travelled north through unknown country to Mount Shenton, about 100 km (60 miles) north east of the present day town of Laverton, Western Australia. After prospecting around Mount Margaret and Mount Ida, they returned to Coolgardie, having been away for ninety days, having travelled about 1350 km (850 mile). Carnegie named Mount Luck after Gus: it is located 110.33kms east of Laverton and 287.91kms northeast of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia .They had found little evidence of gold, and nothing worth claiming a lease on, but Gus Luck laughed at Carnegies conservative and royalist
