Stanley Lloyd Stuchbery
Lloyd contracted dysentery during the Second World War, and was hospitalised. When he returned post war, he was a thin shadow of his former strong self. He soon married Mary but sadly shortly thereafter contracted Polio. Due to working through a hard bailing season and his already lowered immune system, Lloyd collapsed and was taken to the city and put in an iron lung for a year. When he recovered from polio, he had limited use of one arm and was paralysed in both legs. This determined man never let his disability slow him down. He and his brother designed and built a wheelchair that he could control independently. His wife Mary lifted him when required. he continued to work the farm and went on to have 6 children. Although he could no longer continue his cycling career, his love of racing never waned, he once raced a car to Mildura from Portland in his wheelchair, and won. He was a local hero and an inspiration to all who knew him.
