A Sad Case
(out of a Syracuse paper?)

Edward R wise, son of the late former deputy county clerk William W Wise, committed suicide at Syracuse last Saturday afternoon by firing a bullet through his brain. He was twenty eight years old and was an exceptionally bright young man. In 1895 he graduated from the Normal and was regarded as on of the best scholars in his class. After graduating he taught at Rushville for two years and made such a good principal that when he resigned, his brother was elected to succeed him. He then entered Syracuse University and graduated from the law college of that institution last June. After which he took bar examinations and passed successfully. He entered the law firm of Baldwin & Magee in Syracuse as head clerk and his prospects seemed bright, but on Saturday he shot himself as noted.
No cause in known for his act, and no theory can be formed. It seemed like a case of suicide without reason . The body was brought to Groveland and buried last Tuesday. The services were at the home of his uncle, E M Magee, Rev Dr J. E. White officiating

Mrs. C.P Murray, Daughter of Col John Magee
Died at her fathers residence Thursday morning last, age 27 years and 10 months. Funeral took place Sunday at 1pm, Dr. F. Dw. Ward officiating, assisted by Rev. T. Aitken of North Sparta and Rev D Foster of Buffalo. The vast assembly that gathered to pay their last respects to the departed spoke plainer than words the high esteem with which she was regarded. A beautiful floral tribute in the form of a pillow bearing the word "Rest" was sent from Union Springs by the ladies of the church of which her husband is pastor. A few weeks since feeling that her life was near its close, she desired to be brought to her childhood home, that her last days might be spent with kindred and friends. Many were the hopes and prayers for her recovery. But the ablest medical skill and tenderest nursing were alike unavailing. In the early bloom of womanhood she was stricken down. And husband, parents and friends mourn her early death. She leaves a little daughter, who is too young to realize her loss. She was borne to her last resting place by her 4 brothers who deeply feel the loss of their loved and loving sister. And yet they mourn not as those without a hope for she had chose the better part and they can but feel with Ella, all is well.

"Death of the well-known surgeon at his home in this city (Syracuse)

The death of Dr. Charles M Magee at 1:50 this morning, while not unexpected by reason of the sad news of his condition the past two or three days, is still a shock. At his bedside were his brother and sister, Walter W Magee and Mrs. William H Gray (Evangia). Sunday morning there was an operation for appendicitis and Dr Magee rallied from the operation but unforeseen complications set in and death resulted. Dr Magee was unconscious during his last hours.
Charles Marquis Magee was born on the 6th of December 1853 in Groveland, Livingston County. He was a son of Col. John Magee and Mariette Patchin. The family is of Scotch-Irish decent. Dr Magee’s early education was received in the common schools and in the State Normal school at Geneseo NY. At an early age he decided to become physician and with that end in view entered Bellevue Medical college hospital in New York City, from which he was graduated with distinction in the class of 1880. Since then he resided in Syracuse. For several years he steadily maintained and built up a large general practice. In 1893, having determined to make abdominal surgery and diseases of women a specialty, he went to NYC and took special instruction under Dr Florin Krug, the specialist in gynecology, and returning to Syracuse, opened a private sanitarium for women. Since then he had devoted his time entirely to abdominal surgery and during a short career in this direction he has acquired a wide and favorable reputation. Dr Magee’s ability in his specialties is known throughout the profession, not only in Syracuse but also in the State and Country. He was the first in Syracuse to perform total hysterectomy an operation at once difficult and rare and was also the first surgeon in this city to perform intubations, which is now quite frequently practiced. Dr Magee’s specialty in abdominal work led him to have a wide acquaintance with appendicitis, the disease with which he was stricken.
Dr Magee was not married. He was a charter member of the Syracuse Academy of Medicine and was also a member of the Onondaga county medical society, the NY Medical assoc, and Syracuse Lodge, No 501, F. A&M. Dr Magee is survived by three brothers. Walter Warren Magee of this city, John C and Edward M Magee of Genesee Valley, Livingston county and one sister Mrs. William H Gray of the same place. At the time of this death Dr Magee was erecting a sanitarium, for women in Seymour St near the corner of West St.
Dr Magee’s Remains may be viewed at his late residence from 12 to 3 pm tomorrow, The services will be held at the house, 800 south West St. In the afternoon and will be strictly private. Internment will e made at Groveland NY on Saturday.

Sarah provided a handwritten history of the Magee family which has been preserved. Some excerpts:
Sometime in the year 1790 three brothers came from County Antrim, Ireland and settled for a time in eastern PA and New Jersey. They were William Magee and his brothers, Henry and Charles. About that time the fame of the Genesee River was drawing farmers from the East and PA and New Jersey – they sold their homes there – Wm and Harry came (to) Groveland buying what is called the Hartman farm now occupied by Mr. Coolidge. Harry bought land further north after a few years spent in various callings he went to Bath, Steuben county. William sold his farm to Mr. Ward and bought the land now owned by Col. Magee. 300 acres. The country was new – bears, wolves and panthers roamed the woods. It was dangerous to go in the woods. My grandmother used to tell me of the privations (?) endured the hard labor to make living comfortable. It seems almost incredible they had 8 children – John the youngest was 2 years old when his father died in 1812. Grandma was a wonderful woman . She managed the farm, had the best stock in the neighborhood and the finest fruit orchard in that part of the country. She was a large, fine looking woman. Kept well posted on all the important events of the time, a sincere Christian, a member of a Pres. Church which occupied what was called the Gully schoolhouse.

Harry Magee was not successful in making a fortune. His habits were not right – he was a slave to drink – Had a noble wife who died when the children were young. There were 3 sons and I think 3 daughters. I cannot recall the third one. I remember the names of 2 – Mary and Rebecca. The sons were John, Thomas, Jefferson and Hugh. The greatest one in enterprise was John who early in life became noted for his honorable character and business talent. Both he and Hugh were strong temperance advocates , John and Jefferson married into a very aristocratic family, the McBirneys (?) Hugh’s wife was of a French family. Two of his sons were in the Mexican war. Harry married a Spanish lady and from her acquired a large tract of land near Santa Barbara. John was a (dost?) of wanderer. Both drunkards. John’s oldest son, Duncan was a fine businessman but drank to such an extent he died from the effects. His son John also. George the last one was a fine man. I do not know of George’s sons – their names are John and George. I wrote his son….(unreadable) He died a young man. His life was disreputable in many ways.

The brother Charles remained in Penn. After years they lost track of him. I don’t know whether they kept up any correspondence with the home folks in Ireland or not. Perhaps not.

You will find in the memorial history of John Magee which I think is in your home, all that is known of the ancestry – the family history of our branch . The descendants of William Magee you probably know. There are dark pages in this volume. William was a drinker. Died but when 46 years of age from a spree with the returned soldiers of the war of 1812. Charles, your grandfather was the most brilliant of the Magees, I mean in intellect. His ability was acknowledged by all the better class of men, the Carrols and Fitzhughs were his friends. He was deputy sheriff when the office was one of honor. But it was his (unreadable word). He was lead to drink. In a few good years, all was lost. The story is too painful to write (unreadable words). His son, your uncle Harry, followed in his career – you know about him. Uncle Sam Magee and Uncle Hugh in their old age disgraced themselves in that weakness. John H. you know became a confirmed inebriate. Col. John was the only brother who never yielded. I think he was like his mother’s family. I do know know of any of his boys who are tipplers (?). God grant that all the young men may “beware of strong drink of the wine that is not in the cup”. I am not sure that quotation is correct, but the meaning is. All the sisters Aunt Julia, Sally Betsey and Rebecca who was somewhat of a dwarf and quite deaf, but who almost had second sight in reading characters and in fathoming motives were thought to be well hidden. She died quite young, middle life. All the sisters were grand women the future history of the Magees rests upon the life work of the young nephews and cousins. What will they make it? Will they learn the lessons of failure of dishonesty, that comes in every daily paper – Most of this is private history for you alone, You can sift out what is proper to give to others besides your own folks. It is poorly written, but gives the facts as I know them.

“Edward M Magee was a prominent landowner in Livingston county. He owned and farmed about 1,000 acres. Evening dinners in the Magee household were rather formal and included white linens and sterling silver napkin rings at each place setting.
In the 1920s He was elected as a representative to the NY Assembly. He was knows as a “black” republican-a strict advocate of conservative views socially and economically as was his brother, Walter.
When Luella Magee married George Linton, Edward disowned her because the Lintons were an impoverished family and Democrats. This was considered by Edward Magee to be a mixed marriage.
