Steve was my grandfather. He died before I was born. He came to America as a young man, first to NYC and then to Chicago. He was a tailor and was a bootlegger during Prohibition. He had contacts with organized crime. He was small in stature but a powerful man.
Michael Gurlo of Brooklyn, Kings County, NY was born on April 30, 1914, and died at age 63 years old in October 1977.
Anna (Schmidt) Gurlo of Tipton St., in LaPorte, LaPorte County, Indiana U.S. was born in 1897, and died at age 69 years old in 1966 in LaPorte, IN. Anna Gurlo was buried in 1966 at Pine Lake Cemetery in La Porte.
My father was born in Chicago and grew up in Chicago, IL, Batavia, IL and LaPorte, IN. He went to Senn H.S. in Chicago and also a laboratory school that I believe was run by the YMCA. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He worked numerous jobs, including at Proctor and Gamble in Chicago, and with his father Steve Gurlo in the garment industry. He changed his surname from Gurlo to "North" ca. 1965. His death records would be under John North.
