Mabel studied nursing at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. She became an RN, and the last part of her career (in the 1950s and 60s), she was the head night nurse at Ferguson Droste Ferguson Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She made her home with her sister, Camilla Emhuff Godfrey, who was an LPN.
