Joseph Lee Lanza Sr.
Joseph Louis Lanza, also known as Joseph Lee Lanza - records differ, was born to Luigi Lanza (1848 - 1920) and Antonina Guercio (1859 - 1926), both of whom were born in Sicily. He had two brothers and three sisters, Louis J. (1879 - 1954), Salvatore, Josephine, Michelina, and Clementina Lanza. Joseph Lee Lanza Sr. came to America by himself in 1905 at the age of 12. He came through Ellis Island and joined some of his extended family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1918 and served at Fort Dix, New Jersey, changing his name to Joseph and adding a middle name, Lee, because the Army said he had to have a middle name. Joseph Lanza married Edith Caroline Gustafson (1899 - 1977), a Swedish girl from the Pittsburgh area, in 1918. They had 5 children; Joseph Jr., (died in infancy), Louis, Charles, Lena and Salvatore "Samuel" Lanza. They divorced in 1929 and he married a second time in 1932, this time to a widow, Minnie Mannan (1895 - 1983), Joseph died on Memorial Day, 1961 in Crile Veteran's Hospital, near Cleveland, OH. He is buried in the veteran's section of Oakwood Cemetery, Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.
