Charles Sweeny in Military Hospital in France
Charles Sweeny served in the French Foreign Legion in WWI & was severly wounded by a German Machine Gun bullet and almost died. This picture show his emaciated condition while recovering.

Charles Sweeny
Charles Sweeny was from a wealthy mining family from the Pacific Northwest in the USA. He became a profession soldier and fought in the Spanish American War, in several revelutions in South America, he went to France after being kicked out of West Point twice, married a Belgium girl and fought in WWI with the Foreign Legion, the American Army when America entered the War, in Poland after World War I, in Morocco, in Spain against Italy and Germany, he recruited pilots for France before it was overrun by Germany in World War II, he escaped to England and helped for the Eagle Squadron. This is just a partial list of his accomplishments. He was friends with several French Generals, became good friends with Ernest Hemingway, and met with Franklin Roosevelt. He was also chased by the FBI for recruiting pilots for Morocco, France, and England which was against American Neurality Laws before America entered the war.
