A photo of Ronald Gripon, Dad, way way back when. This was just after the end of WWII and my dad after serving proudly in the Pacific Theater witnessing the surrender of the defeated Japanese Empire while aboard the USS Missouri, which his primary duty was to clean the barrels of the big guns. He almost lost his life in a freak accident when he was cleaning a barrel and fell asleep. A sudden battle erupted and the gun he was napping in was used to sink one of the few remaining Japanese battle ships. He was shot right down the barrel of one of their guns and they ended up firing him right back, before they had the opportunity to torture him. He slept through the entire thing, but when he woke up, he said he had a dream that he had just been born, twice.
He was awarded several medals that day, including one from the Japanese for his help cleaning out their rusted old barrel.

A photo of my dad, Ronald Gripon, with his mom and dad, Almon and Geneva Gripon. My dad at about 3 years old with his mother and father. I wonder if he knew that about 50 years from then, he would be retiring as an officer in the U.S. Navy.

A photo of Ronald Gripon, my dad, way back when. Fresh out of basic training in San Diego. I wonder if he knew he'd be retiring 30 years later as an officer, having been fortunate enough to spend about 25 of those years right here in San Diego.
Those were the days, as you can assume by the printed date on the photo, that it could take months before you ran through the entire roll of film so they can be developed.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.

2020 marks 20 years since the inception of AncientFaces. We are the same team who began this community so long ago. Over the years it feels, at least to us, that our family has expanded to include so many. Thank you!
