Descendant of Gov. Thomas Nelson, Jr., of Virginia.
Daughter of John S. Nelson and Frances S. Wray, his wife. Granddaughter of James Nelson and Elizabeth Bennett, his wife. Gr-granddaughter of Thomas Nelson, Jr., and Lucy Grymes, his wife. Thomas Nelson, Jr., (1738-89), was a member of the Provincial Congress, 1774, of the Continental Co. 1776, and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He served as Governor, 1781, equipped the co.at own expense and led them at Yorktown, where he ordered the artillery to fire on his own mansion, which supposedly was headquarters for Cornwallis. His statue was placed with five other patriots on the Washington Monument in Richmond. He was born in Yorktown and died in Hanover.
