Eric McCandless

James McCandless married Jane Malcolmson possibly in 1861 in Shankhill, Ant, Ireland (?) and they had 2 children William John and Margaret Jane. They emigrated to Australia in 1863 on the ship "The Hope" and listed their nationality as Scotch although they may have lived in and travelled from Ireland. Jane appears to have died in childbirth along with daughter Margaret Jane shortly after arrival in Australia in 1863 and is buried at Milawa, Victoria. James' and Jane's young son William John Jnr was killed in 1876 when a horse drawn cart up-ended when he was 14 years old. James was in partnership with his brother William (John) McCandless with farming properties at Howlong and Morebringer, NSW, Australia. They had a falling out in 1878 and dissolved the partnership. He was last reported as living at Brookong Station, NSW in 1901. No record of his death. James and his brother William (John) parents are unknown, but father's name may have been James which is listed on James' marriage record. William (John) McCandless married Ernistina Diebert in 1877 and had two children, John (William) and Robert Edward. Robert Edward McCandless died in 1883 as a young child by drowning and John (William) McCandless died in 1953. John (William) McCandless married Sophia Bowman in 1925 and had 4 children, John (died as an infant), Kenneth, Leonard, and Vivian.

Thomas James Mccandless of Australia was born in 1860, and had siblings Martha Mary McCandless, Robert Andrew McCandless, and Jane Annie McCandless. Thomas Mccandless died at age 9 years old in 1869.
