John lost a hand in a mining accident in North Clunes in 1869.He married Marion Benny Barlow in 17872 but he marriage didn't last too many years. He then passed through NSW and spent some time in Queensland where a friend from his Ballarat days caught up with him. He then returned to NSW and in 1885 he was working at Nyngan where he met Mary Virgo Fuller nee Smith whom he married at The Manse in Dubbo and Mary who had believed for many years that she was a widow believed him deceased and he did not turn up again until 1892 just a few months before his death . (source Marriage certificate). In this document John stated that he was a widower. Mary also declared herself a widow, which she wasn't, but her husband had disappeared a number of years earlier. His family believed him deceased as did his wife. Nothing was heard of him until 1892 just a few months before his death.in April 1893. Sources deceased estates files and copies of 2 letters written to James after his nephew found out where he was living and working. Meanwhile John and MAry in 1891 were living at Pine Camp near Mudgee. (1891 census). Soon after this Mary's health deteriorated and John bought a property (Orchard) at Riverstone in western Sydney. Sadly the move did not help Mary's health and she died 1st July and is buried at Rookwood cemetery (death certificate and death notice in paper) John was finding the orchard hard work so decided to take up poultry Farming at which he was very successful. Information from articles in local papers. Shortly before his death his friend from Ballarat days, with whom he had maintained contact brought his sister to visit him. After his death she was given the Bible that he had been given by Sir John Franklin for whom his mother his mother had worked. (source Obituary in local papers). He is also mentioned in NSW Police Gazettes on a few occasions when he had been robbed.
