2020 marks 20 years since the inception of AncientFaces. We are the same team who began this community so long ago. Over the years it feels, at least to us, that our family has expanded to include so many. Thank you!

Carol was a very troubled lady and a bad mother. She loved and cared for her dogs. Her childhood dog was named Pal. She spent the latter part of her life living with George Farabell as her Partner. She was a lifelong resident of ST. Louis, MO. She also enjoyed spending her summers at her home at Lake of The Ozarks, MO and her winters on Grand Cayman Island. In her earlier years she was a very good golfer. She played golf so well that she was always very competitive in most of the golf tournaments she entered into. She was also an avid Bridge and Canasta card player. She greatly enjoyed time she spent at Westwood CC in St. Louis County playing Golf and cards. Her excessive use of Alcohol and Tobacco were directly related to her earlier than expected demise. She had been a member of The Barnes Jewish Hospital Auxiliary Parkview Chapter. Just prior to her demise I told her "I wish we had more quality time together." I hope that she has now achieved peace, happiness and tranquility in the hereafter. During her life Carol was, at her own choice, controlled by her Mother. Carol spent her entire lifetime trying to establish her own independent identity but was hopelessly tied to and subordinately dictated to by her Mother. Carol was a very good bookkeeper and taught me how to properly fill out a personal check.. Carol did take us on vacations to Jamaica, Florida, Atlantic City, NJ, Naples, Maine, Hawaii, Branson, MO, Lake of the Ozarks, MO and a Norwegian Cruise Line trip to Barbados, Antigua, Martinique and Puerto Rico. Carol loved to sit in the sun next to bodies of water. Carol always came back from her vacations extremely sun tanned. Carol always enjoyed Christmas including decorating her tree and her home. She loved playing Christmas records and fireplace fires in her home during the holidays. I was usually Santa distributing the gifts under the Christmas Tree. Carol had sadness and disappointment in her daughter and her son. I wanted more than anything to convince her that her son had been a success and a child to be proud of. This was never to happen. I will grieve all of my life that Carol couldn't enjoy the happiness, positive achievements and success of her son. I will also regret that her marriage to Jay Lofton Fihn was unhappy and ended in dissolution. She and Jay were just the wrong partners for each other. I do think that Carol's time spent with George Farabell was happy and fulfilling to her. George did spend over 20 years of his life with Carol. George met Carol when she needed her Kitchen Cabinets replaced at the Hanley Towers Apartments. George's carpentry work was exceptional.
My father was a business deal maker. He lived in both St. Louis, MO and Las Vegas, NV. Travel America was a company he formed that combined unused hotel rooms and unsold airline seats at greatly discounted prices available to the public; far before Priceline, Hotwire , Orbitz etc. My father also owned and operated International Air Travel Service. His ideas for formation of new companies were impeccable and far ahead of his time. He was also one of the funniest people I've ever known. He knew thousands of jokes and loved to tell them. He was largely responsible for my attending Law School which was a life changing event for me. He believed strongly in family and felt that a close knit family was very important. He was my father from a first marriage in St. Louis. He later remarried and had two more children from his second marriage. He spent the majority of his life as a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada. He had close ties with the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas. He was most proud of his ability to buy any item at a discounted price; often far below retail price. Throughout his life he traveled for both business and pleasure. I was fortunate enough to accompany him on a trip to South America in the early 1970's. We visited Peru, Chile and Argentina. We traveled using Braniff Airlines. It was a trip I'll never forget. We both enjoyed time we spent together. He passed away at far too young an age. He and the Fihn family always drove Cadillacs. The only exception was when he owned and drove an Alpha Romeo. He always read the entire Wall Street Journal on a daily basis. It was common for him to read the Wall Street Journal, watch cable TV business programs and talk on the telephone at the same time. He always aspired to be a person with wealth and high society affiliation. Sadly at his time of death he felt that his life had not accomplished what he most desired; acquisition of great wealth. I reminded him that wealth was not the only important thing in life. I told him that he had 4 children and a long second marriage. I also told him that he had a lot to be proud of. Two of his children, Jeffrey and Greg, were both professionals licensed and practicing Law and Medicine. I told him that his life had still been a success despite his focus on wealth which he never attained. I had just visited him in Las Vegas 2 days before his death. Somehow I was able to stand up and speak at his funeral; despite my deep sorrow upon his loss. At his funeral service the music being played was that of Frank Sinatra. Sinatra was always his favorite singer and artist. He was also a licensed single engine VFR private pilot. I flew with him on many occasions. Flying a single engine plane was always his passion. My Father had no interest in Sports or Sporting Events or games. He was deeply interested in everything about World War II. He was constantly reading about WWII and watching TV documentaries about it. That was another great passion of his. He was not a religious person and did not actively practice any religion. At his funeral no religious person conducted any form of service. He was cremated and his ashes were taken up in a private plane and scattered across the mountains outside Las Vegas. He has no formal grave site. I am saddened by that fact because I would have liked to have visited his grave site. My father was closely associated with The Dunes Hotel and Morris A. Shenker, a prominent Criminal Law Attorney, who practiced law in St. Louis, Missouri and who owned the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Morris Shenker and my father were 3rd cousins.
