Ola Haynes was born on October 23, 1945 to parents Thomas Eugene Haynes (1896-1985) and Willie Mae (Brown) Haynes (1921-1987). She grew up in a large family in Rusk, Texas, USA.
On August 15, 1975 she married Philip Roscoe Lacy Jr (1943–2007) in Gregg, Texas, USA. She later married John "Smitty Smith (1922-1995).
