Dr. Ebenezer Bush was a pioneer in dental implant surgery. He was the first African-American to open a dental practice in Long Beach, CA, and founder of Long Beach Credit Union.
Ebenezer B Bush Jr. was born to Ebenezer B. Bush Sr (1883-1981) and Gertrude Blackemore Bush (1898-1964) and had sisters Ruthie Lee (Bush) Hooks (1919-2004) and Eunice Marie (Bush) Collins (1922-2020), and half siblings Fritz Ethel Bush Sr. (1916-2006) and Hans Ethel Bush (born and died in 1916).
Dr. Ebenezer Bush, Jr. DDS, known as "E.B.", was a prominent African American dentist and community leader. He graduated from Tuskegee Institute and later Howard University's School of Dentistry, becoming the first African American to establish a dental practice in Long Beach, California.
Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to community and economic development, education, civil rights, and employment. He became a Master Dentist, a pioneer in dental implant surgery, and completed a postgraduate residency in anesthesia at Harbor USC Medical Center.
He also founded Project Tutor, an organization to help kids read, and was involved in numerous organizations such as the NAACP, Long Beach Community Credit Union, and the Long Beach City College Foundation. Bush was an eloquent speaker, and was known for his love of scripture.
He received many awards and honors, including the key to the city of Long Beach and was invited to the White House during the George H.W. Bush Administration in honor of his civic and philanthropic contributions. He and his wife, Wynona, were married for 65 years and had two sons, both of whom became doctors themselves.
Bush passed away on August 16, 2016, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, compassion, and dedication to his community.
