She was cremated before police could investigate her death. In 1991 partnered with his father Thomas Smith to form Ametican Solar Service & Sales, sharing an office with AL Rich as AL focused on system design and manufacturing, Richard & Tom focused on sales and service. Forced into early retirement 2012/2013 due to early on set Alzheimers, American Solar continues as a family owned & operated business by his (step) son Joel Griggs. They are father & son in every way except biology. Richard being brave and compassionate, always wanting to help others, was the first human being to join a clinical trial at Georgetown University for NGF, Nerve Growth Factor, experimental gene therapy, Ceregene 110, implanted in the brain to grow new cholenergic neurons to replace the ones destroyed by Alzheimers, December 18, 2009. October 2010 he was featured in stories on WUSA, CBS Washington, WRC, NBC & ABC Nightline with Terry Moran. This is a temporary fix, not a cure as Alzheimers will continue to destroy neurons. It worked for 4 1/2 years then the Alzheimers progression resumed. Sadly, after 6 years, the clinical trial was not able to enroll enough patients and funding ran out, so the amazing treatment did not get FDA approval. But his story & journey continues to inspire others and to give hope and defy the odds. When Terry Moran asked him why he stepped up to be the first to do such a risky procedure and treatment with no certainty of it helping, and potentially even causing more problems (it is deep brain neuro surgery, and an uncertain gene), his answer was "Whether it helped me or not, I knew they would learn something that would help others coming behind me*" (*future Alzheimers patients) That's the kind of man he is
