Johann Jakob Brenneisen was born 14 Dec 1810 in Hauingen, Lörrach, Baden, Germany, son of Johann Jakob Brenneisen (a cabinet maker) and Maria Eva Bürgin. His parents never left Germany. Johann married Anna Maria "Mary" Bühler on 5 July 1858 in Rümmingen, Lorrach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Children of Johann and Anna were all born in Hauingen, Lörrach, Baden, Germany: Rebekka (Mrs. Joseph Riesterer) born 6 Sept 1838; Johann Jakob Friedrich "John" Brenneisen (married Mary __) born 16 May 1841; Edward Brenneisen (married Margaretha Catherine Dorothea "Dora" Meyer) born 27 Oct 1845; Maria Elisabeth "Lizzie" (Mrs. Georg Dietrich CONRAD Meyer) born 15 Aug 1847; Ernest Friedrich Brenneisen (married Edna Kindervater) born 2 Jan 1850; Heinrich E "Henry" Brenneisen (married Mathilde Buehring) born 13 Nov 1853; Anna Maria "Mary" (1st marriage to Carl Wilhelm Christian Jurgemeyer; 2nd marriage to Rev. Philip Studt, Jr.) born 1 Aug 1859; Ernestine (Mrs. Paul F Rollier) born 14 Nov 1864.
On 15 May 1867, fifty-six year old Johann Jakob Brenneisen boarded the ship "Bavaria" in Hamburg, Germany, and brought his wife and six of his children (ranging in age from 22 to 2!) to America arriving at the Port of New York on 31 May 1867. His younger brother, Johann Frederick, also made the trip.
In 1870, the family is living in Bruce, Benton County, Iowa, with the six children still in the household. Sometime between that census and the 1880 census, his wife, Anna Maria passed away, but they were still living in Bruce. Only two of the children were still in the household: Henry and Ernestine and also his brother who was listed as a "boarder." Never found a record of his brother ever being married.
Johann Jakob Brenneisen passed away on 3 Sep 1897 in Chickasaw County, Iowa, and was buried in Mount Carroll Cemetery. His brother, Johann Frederick, passed away 17 Sep 1886, in Lutherville, Arkansas.
The older sister of these brothers was Maria Eva Brenneisen. She married Johann Friedrich Scheurer and this family migrated to America in 1843 first settling in western New York, then to Wisconsin and then to Iowa. They were the parents of 8 children. A great grandson of this couple was William Lawrence Shirer, notable American author and international radio correspondent William L. Shirer, most well known for his book "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich." Some Scheurer descendants adopted "Shirer" (which is close to the sound when Germans pronounce the surname), while others kept the German spelling.
The younger sister of Johann Jakob and Johann Frederick Brenneisen was Maria Elisabeth Brenneisen. She married Alois Back. They were the parents of 7 children - all born in Germany - but they were in the U.S. by 1870. They lived and died in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
