Alice & Ross took on burdens that were not their own...and I believe God blessed them for it. 2 of those big burdens were me and my sister Margaret. We shared same mother, Ruth. "Ruthy" or Ruth was Alice's big sister by about 3 years, I'm not sure exactly. Both were born to Lydia and Robert Everett in Lakewood , Ohio, in the late 1920's. So the two girls lived through the great depression and WWII. So Ruth married Lang M Courtney from I think st Louis. Ruth and Lang divorced a few years after. Mom-Alice got married in, I think 1949, to Ross, in Sept. (3 or 5, I get it mixed up w her bday). So Ruth remarries in 1956 around summer. Val is born, Nov. Ruth divorced hubby #2Tracy Southworth. Ruth has third child by Tracy. Alice has 3 children by this time. Jeff, Mark, and Jill. Around 18 months apart. Blip blip blip. So Ruth for various reasons which deserve a separate book and will only be alluded to here, received mental health diagnosis and is house at one point in the Sal Army, then in the State Hospital of Calif. Near San Jose.
So Alice rises to the occasion. Alice by now has another son. Meg and Val are in the Norberry"s care. Alice's 6th child died of sudden infant death syndrome at the age of 9 months. Wod Alice like to take in Ruth's son, George? No thank you says Alice. Not fair to said boy as no one can replace my son, To bie, whom I lost to SIDS.
Fast forward several years. Val is 10, meg is around 17. Val's adoption FINALLY goes through the courts. I known to Val all along as she thought she was adopted since age 9 months when she joined Norberry family. Meg, however, not so lucky. Uphill battle with Meg's (tightfisted, impolite) male parent Lang is lost & Not errys do not and cannot confer their last name on Meg. This leads to endless questions, raised eyebrows, and finger counting with a repeat question to Alice "WHEN did you get married?
Alice & Ross divorce when Val turns 18. Alice is devastated for a few years but recovers 2 years before heart disease claims her. Alice had smallpox as a child and it left her heart scarred.
Meg:. Married 2 x gets into photography, has 2 boys, Reuben & Josh. Val, decides to not have children. Succumbs to marriage age 52. Happily married for several years. Does art, music. Jill married age 20, has foster home then rises in corporate world to exec director. Mark married X4 , one boy, Mark II. Jeff never marries.
