My grandfather died long before I was born but my father and uncle kept family records that had been passed down through the generations. Ernest was not an only child - he had an older brother and 3 older sisters. He married Annabel (or Annie Isobel) Rhodes and they had 2 sons, John and James Leslie Ferguson. James was my father.
Ernest's father, John Christol Ferguson who was married to Emily Elizabeth Keith, was born 1847 and they lived in Kirkcudbright, Scotland. John was the Captain of a cargo ship and his father, Adam Maitland Ferguson (1797 - 1870) was a mariner.
Back to Ernest - he spent some time working as a bookie, according to my dad, but he also served in WW1 and I believe, though not absolutely certain, that he also fought during the Boer War.
