Nelson was born Edinburgh on the 4th of November 1896. Nelson was 19 at the time of his death and was originally put down as MIA, but was confirmed as KIA in July of following year. There is a lot of mystery surrounding Nelson not only due to his birth place, but because of his parents too. His supposed parents were Joseph Athersmith, who died in 1905 and his mother Margaret. However, by 1896/1897, both Nelson's parents were starting to get on in age and although it isn't confirmed, there is a belief that one of Nelson's 'sisters' may have actually been his mother, with the young mother being sent away to Scotland in order to hide the fact that she was the true mother. Although this is possible, there is no form of evidence to support the claim. Additionally, Nelson's school record puts his parent down as "Geo Athersmith", which could suggest his father was a George Athersmith, but there is no mention of this name in any other previous documents.
