Most of the Frederick M. Hertel children were "born on a dirt floor", which means the house had a dirt floor when they were born. In those days, children were born at home, and a midwife helped with the birthing of the children. There were no doctors in this area at the time. This photo was taken about 1934.
Fred M.'s father won a land lottery in Corson County, which is why they moved there in 1917. Grandpa John built this house as a temporary home until he could build a nicer one to accommodate his large family. He left this one standing, which was convenient for Fred M. when he got married.
