My Grandmother Virginia (Jennie) Lou Suggs, 'Mammy' Ray. Wife of Robert Luther Ray, daughter of John Hartford Sugg and Louisa Ann Ford Sugg. Born 3 November 1876, Sedalia Ky. Died 6 March 1953 Cottage Grove, Tennessee.

Found in an estate sale at Wingo, Graves County, Ky.. There were some identifiable photos of my Suggs relatives in the batch, including my grandmother, Etta Maude Suggs.
On the back is written "Barnie Y. Age 12. Taken Jan.6, 1905 For Aunt Mat Y."
It was made in a studio in Murray, Calloway County, Ky.
Because of the connection in my family between the Yarbroughs and Jettons, and their connection to the Suggs, I believe this to be a Yarbrough, but do not have a Barnie Yarbrough in my database. I assume it to be a nickname. I would appreciate any correspondence on this subject.

"Uncle Worth" was the brother of my grandfather, Robert Luther Ray. His full name was Columbus Worth Ray. He was born in Hickman County Kentucky on August 2, 1880 and died on June 24, 1967 in Creal Springs, Illinois (Nursing home). He left no natural children but was loved by his friend, Mary Beeson's children and grandchildren as if he were their own father and grandfather. Mary is buried beside him in Thistlewood Cemetery, Mounds Illinois. He lived in Mound City Illinois for 50 of his 86 years. He lived in Columbus, Kentucky in 1917, as he gave the information and signed it on his brother, William Alvis Ray's death certificate.

My Grandfather, Robert Luther "Bob" Ray, was born in unknown location (Probably Calloway County, Kentucky) on Dec. 12, 1876, died in Weakley County, Tenn. on Oct. 18, 1953. Buried in Olive Branch Methodist Church Cemetery, Cottage Grove, Tennessee. He is shown in the 1880 U.S. Census in Brinkley, Calloway County Kentucky as age 3. His father is shown as John F. Ray, mother Elizabeth J. (Arnold) Ray. His siblings are shown as William A., age 7; Mary L., age 5; and James R., age 1. The mother and all the children are born in Ky., John in Tenn.
My grandmother, Virginia Lou "Jennie" Suggs Ray was born in or near Sedalia, Graves County, Ky. on Nov. 3, 1876. She is listed in the 1880 Census, Lynnville, Graves County, Ky. at age 4. Her father is John H. Suggs, mother is Louisa A.(Ford). Siblings are Mary E., Mira J.(This would be Elmira Josephine "Josie"), and Flora M.. John is born in Tenn., all the others are born in Ky. Jennie died on Mar. 3, 1953 in Henry County, Tenn., near Cottage Grove. She is also buried at Olive Branch Cemetery.
They were the parents of John D. Ray, Lottie Imogene Ray, and my father, Alvis D. Ray. Robert was also the father of Otis Luther Ray by his first marriage to Reddie Manning.

Photo is bonded to a small piece of smooth cardboard with scalloped edges. Was made in Love Studio, Murray Kentucky. I would appreciate any input.

This is my maternal grandmother, Etta Maude Suggs Sampson. Born 4 December 1880 in Sedalia, Ky. to John Hartford Sugg and Louisa Ann Ford Sugg. She married Henry Lafayette Sampson on 25 May 1904 in Mayfield, Graves County, Ky. A family story is that they drove a buggy to Charleston Mo. and married there on 25 May 1903. I can't confirm this, but have seen the marriage record in the courthouse in Mayfield.
She was the mother of six girls and one boy. The girls were; Hattie Lala, Gracie Jewell, Alma Estherline, Clara B., Frances Mae and Evelyn Elizabeth. The boy was James Franklin.
She died on 13 Mar 1955 in Mayfield, Kentucky. I remember her in her old age as a small, thin woman with long hair that she kept in a "bun" on the back of her head. She always smiled at us kids and sometimes sung old songs to us.

My Great Uncle Will or Willy Sugg, about age 15, born about 1890. This portrait was probably made in Murray or Mayfield, Ky. about 1905.

Great aunt Clara May Kemp Suggs, wife of Charles David Suggs. Daughter of Nathan Langley Kemp and Caroline Josephine Paschall.Born 13 July 1888 Graves Co., Ky, died 27 January 1962 New Boston, Mich. Appears to be about 20 years old.

My great aunt, Mary Elizabeth (Mollie) Suggs with husband George Reese Bailey II. Photo made in Murray Kentucky. The Suggs family home was in Sedalia, Ky. I suspect that this is their wedding picture. The time frame is about 1900, give or take 10 years.
