William Savage
William Savage
WILLIAM SAVAGE was the second child of John and Rebecca Savage. He was born in Abbeville Co., South Carolina about 1831. He moved to St. Clair County, Alabama near the community of Coal City (now Wattsville) around 1835. William married Mary Francis Jones 18 May 1851. The wedding was performed by John H. Graham. Mary Francis Jones was born abt 1834 in South Carolina. The parents of Mary Francis Jones were Wiley B. Jones, born abt 1804 in South Carolina, and Mary Savage Jones, born abt 1805 in South Carolina. Deed records indicate that William Savage sold forty acres of land to Byres Rowan for $28.00 in 1858. In 1860, William Savage and wife, Mary Francis Savage, sold land to William Edge for $75.00. The land was in Township 15, Section 36 which was just northeast of Coal City.
William served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. G, 18th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. Card No. 1: Company Muster Roll for Dec. 31, 1861 to Aug. 31, 1862 states that William enlisted December 20, 1861 at "Green" by Capt. Brewster for a period of 1 year. Remarks: Discharged on the 13 of August, 1862. Card No. 2: Regimental Return for June, 1862 - The only thing on this card in in the section titled: Absent enlisted men accounted for: Sick in hospital Int. Card No. 3: Receipt Roll for "Commutation of Rations."
From June 12, 1862 to July 12, 1862. Signer's name: William Savedge Remarks: paid June 27, 1862. Card No. 4: Roll of Prisoners of War - paroled by Brevt. Brig. Genl. M. H. Chrysler, commanding U.S. forces at Talladega, Ala. Roll dated Talladega, Ala., June 20, 1865. When paroled: June 1, 1865. Where paroled: Talladega.
William's second wife was Martha Edge. Martha, born 30 Jul 1843 in Georgia, was the daughter of Obediah Edge, born 18 Mar 1819 in Georgia, and his first wife, Nancy L. Edge. Obediah Edge later married Rhoda Russell Smith from Tennessee. William Savage and Martha Edge were married 16 Apr 1865. They are enumerated in the Alabama state census of 1866 in St. Clair County. Around 1867 William moved to Bedford County, Tennessee, where his older brother, Marshall, had also moved. William appears in the Bedford County Tennessee census of 1870. By 1877, William returned to St. Clair County, Alabama, where he is listed on that census in 1880. Around 1881, William moved to Cass County, Texas, where he first appears on the tax rolls in 1882. His second wife, Martha died in Cass County on February 28, 1896. On April 28, 1900 William married Mrs. Sallie E. Porterfield. William died in Cass County, Texas on March 11, 1906.

Hezekiah Slade
Hezekiah Slade
Hezekiah Slade was born in SC 14 Apr 1804. He married Helena Taylor 13 Feb 1829. Helena Taylor was born 20 Aug 1809 in AL. Hezekiah and Helena lived in Marion County, Mississippi. They had six sons and two sons-in law who fought in the Civil War. Two sons, Ebenezer and Hezekiah Franklin, were killed. Two sons, Samuel and George were wounded. Their two sons-in-law, Rutillous Ladner and Plummer Ladner, also died in the war. One son, Daniel, was discharged due to illness. Hezekiah died in 1863 while most of his sons were away fighting in the Civil War. The children of Hezekiah Slade and Helena (Taylor) Slade (all born in MS):
