Adam Lee Thomas is the son of Jeffrey Allen Thomas SR and Ellen Elizabeth DeGoyler. He was born on January 5, 1982 and he had siblings including Jeffrey Allen Thomas Jr (born 1980) and Courtney Elizabeth Thomas (born 1990).
Because serving in the military was a family tradition, no one was surprised when he decided to enlist in the Army on August 9, 2001 he was later assigned to the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, stationed at Fort Drum, New York, Adam played a vital role in his unit's operations.
Tragically, during a patrol near the Pakistan border, his unit engaged Taliban guerillas. As one of six snipers facing enemy fire in the early hours of "Operation Mountain Viper," Adam fought valiantly. Despite the relentless firefight that lasted over an hour, he sustained injuries that ultimately led to his passing.
Adam last talked to his mother and sister by phone on the Wednesday before he was killed. He told them they were about to eat a good meal, were watching movies and not doing much.
