Mary is the daughter of John Hubbard Walser and Eliza Jane Myers. She was born in Davidson county and is a sister to Malinda Josephine, William Robert (who died at age 15), Susan Edith, Laura Columbus and Mittie Walser. Their father was twice a POW at Point Lookout, MD during the civil war.
Mary was admitted to the asylum on 8 Oct 1889, the day of her mother's murder. The accused murderer of her mother was Bob Berrier, estranged husband of Mary's sister, Laura. Bob had reportedly heard that most of the Walser family would be accompanying Mary Ellen on her scheduled admission to the asylum. He went to the family home planning to see his estranged wife and their young daughter, Clara. He met, instead, with his mother-in-law who shut the door in his face. He reportedly responded by shooting her thrice and fleeing. His wife unable to testify against her husband a lynch mob was formed and waited for access. They eventually overwhelmed the sheriff and his men and took Mr. Berrier away to a hanging tree. He was lynched by community members none of whom stood trial.
Mary Ellen would remain in care at the asylum for the next 39 years and die just before Christmas of acute multiple neuritis and dementia praecox (schizophrenia).
Mary married on 2 Mar 1864 to Daniel Waggoner Walser and they had 7 children: charles Abia, daniel William, John Caswell, Sidney Johnston, Franklin Barrows, Dayse Elizabeth and Mary Mima.
Mary was the daughter of Abia Taylor Lightner and Jemima Sharp Snelling. She traveled in ox-wagon train across plains with her parents in 1849 and settled with them in Keysville in 1855, moving to Walker Basin in 1858. Lived and raised her family in the Walser Home in Walker Basin, which was "most picturesque in the location". the residence was one of the finest and most complete in its interior arrangements in Kern County. here Mary and dan lived to be about 80 years old after raising a family of 7. At the Walser home, good books suited to both old and young were ever in reach of all. The children almost unconsciously became self-taight. Friends and strangers received kind treatment at the Walsers. Their home was a favorite gathering place for young and old. The Walser home burned in 1917. Mary went to live with her daughter, Dayse Wallace, in Palo Alto after Daniel's death.

Joint funeral services for Mrs. & Mrs. John Thomas Temple, victims of the Olney tornado were conducted from the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Temple, 67, was found dead about a block south of their demolished home, 1007 West Oak Street, and her husband John Temple, died two hours later in the Hamilton hospital of head injuries.
Rev. Erwin Reed, pastor of the Olney First Baptist Churck and Rev. Strickland, pastor of the Medlan's Chapel Primitive Bastist Church officiated.
Mrs. Temple was buried in Vernon, Texas.
Mrs. Temple was survived by: five sons-James C. Coats of Irving, Oscar C. and Olin Coats of Vernon, Chester Coats of Lynwood, CA; daughter-Mrs. Vivian Cribbs of Chillicothe; 15 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren
