THE TRAFFICKING IN STAMPS
For some days past the Premier, Post-master-General, and Attorney General have been holding an the inquiry into alleged trafficking at the General Post-office in old issues of stamps by some of the officials, contrary to the regulations of the department. After hearing statements made by various officers and questioning those immediately concerned, it has been decided to ask the Public Service Board to inquire into the matter. The officers who are to appear before the board are Mr William Morkham, accountant and controller of stamps; Mr W. H. Sinnot, clerk in the accountants branch; Mr Albert Conlson, clerk, now in the Income Tax office; and Mr H. C. Treyvand, sorter, Geelong. The charges to be preferred are alleged "trafficking in stamps; giving untrue statements to the Ministers when inquiring into the matter; and general neglect of duty." These officers, in view of the serious nature of the charge, will be suspended from duty pending the charges against them being investigated by the board. Considerable interest will be taken in the proceedings, as it is the first time that an officer holding such a high and responsible position in the service as Mr W. Morkham has been sent before the Public Service Board. - Argus.
