Introduction

Barbara West married Marvin "Chuck" Turner on October 15, 1992 in Jefferson County, Texas. They separated on February 3, 2004. Barbara had two children from a previous relationship: a son, Bobby Wayne Brown and a daughter, Angela Brown Bagley, who was two years younger than Bobby. On April 2, 2006, Barbara's daughter, Angela, called the police and reported that her mother had committed suicide. Barbara, who was living with her mother in a FEMA trailer, said that she didn't hear her mother shoot herself because she was asleep at the time. See Deputies look into Buna death for the original report. At the end of May 2006, Angela was arrested by local police for the murder of her mother, Barbara. Angela's alibi, that claimed that she was sleeping, didn't hold up. Police could prove that she was on the phone at the time she claimed to be asleep. Furthermore, Angela had a motive, as there was an insurance policy on her mother's life. Additionally, Angela had been telling people that she was soon going to come into a "lot of money." She had three siblings: one brother, Dalton Leon West (1962 - 2014) and two sisters. Barbara first married Robert Earl Brown (1950 - 2012) on November 26th, 1968 in Jasper Texas. They had three children, Angela Kaye Brown (1971 - 2013) and Bobby Wayne Brown, plus one more daughter. Robert and Barbara divorced on January 16th, 1975 in Jasper, Texas. Barbara also married Lonnie Nelson Sheard (1936 - 2008) on January 29th, 1977 in Orange Texas. They divorced on September 2nd, 1982 in Hillsborough, Florida. She then married Marvin "Chuck" Turner on October 15th, 1992 in Jefferson County, Texas. They separated on February 3, 2004. All of Barbara's children were from her first marriage. Her daughter, Angela, was later convicted of killing Barbara for her insurance policy.

Bagley charged in mother's murder

Angela Bagley, 34, of Buna was arrested Wednesday, May 24, and charged with the April 2 murder of her mother, Barbara Turner. Turner, whose death originally was reported by Bagley as a suicide, died from a chest wound inflicted by a .12 gauge shotgun. At the time Bagley told officers that she had been asleep and woke to find her mother's body. "When we interviewed her (Bagley) she insisted she was asleep from 2-7 p.m.," Sheriff's Lt. Larry Folmar said. "However, phone records show she placed numerous phone calls during that time and even after her mother was dead. When we confronted her with that information, she couldn't explain it and asked for an attorney."

According to Folmar, Bagley was the beneficiary of Turner's life insurance and a lawsuit filed in Turner's behalf from a car accident she was injured in a year ago. "We're not sure if that was motivating factor or not," Folmar said. "There is evidence of heavy drug use on Bagley's part, but also, statements from interviews with several people indicate that she told others days before her mother's death that she was about to come into a large amount of money." Bagley was arrested without incident after Folmar arranged for her to come to the Jasper County Annex in Buna to collect some clothing. "She showed up about 4 p.m. and (Texas Ranger) Danny Young and I placed her under arrest," Folmar said. "She had little reaction-no emotion at all."

Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Joe Wilkerson arraigned Bagley and set her bond at $500,000.

Deputies look into Buna death

A death in Buna, originally called in as a suicide, is being investigated as a possible murder by the Jasper County Sheriff's Office. Barbara Turner, 53, of Buna died Sunday, April 2. Her body was discovered at approximately 7 p.m. by her daughter, Angela Bagley, who lived with her mother in the Federal Emergency Management Agency trailer the family received after Hurricane Rita.

According to Sheriff's Capt. Stacey Chambers, Bagley, who was apparently at home at the time of her mother's death, did not hear the shot. An autopsy Monday, led investigators to believe that the death could be ruled a homicide. Bobby Wayne Brown, 36, the victim's son, was arrested Monday afternoon on an unrelated charge of probation violation and was set to be interviewed at press time Tuesday. Chambers stressed that a definitive determination of murder or suicide has, of yet, not been determined.
