Bernard Carter of Geelong, Greater Geelong City County, VIC Australia was born in 1866 to Samuel Carter and Margaret Bradley Carter. He had siblings Margaret Jane (Carter) Le Busque, Samuel Charles Carter, Mary Merrington (Carter) Lucas, Lavinia Rawle Carter, Susan Carter, William Henry Carter, Charles Rawle Carter, and Alfred Ernest Carter. He married Sarah Berry Carter in 1889, and had children Joseph Samuel Carter, Ann Maria Carter, Ann Maria Carter, Elizabeth Carter, Bernard Charles Carter, and Bernard Charles Carter. Bernard Carter died at age 29 years old on December 19, 1896 in Geelong.

In 1866, in the year that Bernard Carter was born, on May 10th, the "banker's bank" - London bank Overend, Gurney and Company - collapsed, beginning the Panic of 1866. Unemployment went up to 8% and wages went down. Only about 16% of joint-stock companies - a company whose stock is owned jointly by the shareholders - weathered the Panic.

In 1879, Bernard was just 13 years old when on October 22nd, Thomas Edison tested the first practical electric light bulb. Lasting 13½ hours before burning out, it used a "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires". He applied for a patent on November 4th, receiving the patent in January 1880.
