More information about Cissie Wilson, in response to the posted comments.
Her family name was Dalston-Ewbanke. The family were not famous, but wealthy.
There was no son born in the family after the final quarter of the 1700's - only daughters.
Each generation wanted to preserve the Ewbanke family name, so set up trusts to ensure the family money didn't go to their husbands and that they wouldn't benefit at all unless they changed their names.
By the early 20th century the family owned more than twenty farms, two pubs and possibly a couple of London addresses, in addition to the family mansion.
It appears Cissie left home after she became pregnant when "her mother wouldn't let her marry the local lad she fancied."
She didn't marry until well after the birth of her son, my Dad. Her only surviving brother never married and so the line came to an end in the early 1960s. Everything was disposed of and the proceeds were said to have been given to charities - but I can't find any records of that!
The family was well known, which I believe is why Cissie was sent from her home in the north west of England to the north east coast.
I have found my grandfather. A local man knew the story and told it to me 102 years later! I have now proven the story to be correct by comparing my DNA with that of the grandson of my grandfather's older brother.
I have not found any evidence that Cissie ever saw my father after she left him with his adoptive mother, nor that she ever knew of the existence of me or my brothers.
If Cissie had married before Dad was born, he'd have inherited everything and as his oldest son I would have inherited it from him!! And Dad would have known his mother and I’d have known my grandmother.
I hope that answers most of the questions. Thanks for your interest.
