Edgar Thomas Hill was born on November 19, 1908 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia United States to Florence Prudence (Henderson) Hill and William Thomas Hill, and had siblings William Henry Hill Sr., Richard Bernard Hill Sr., Mary Annie Hill, Clara Gladys (Hill) Sadler Woodson, Charlie Lester Hill Sr., Clarence Douglas Hill, Lelia Florence (Hill) Bryant, and Ruth Inez (Hill) Barber New. He married Olive Virginia Davis Hill on November 10, 1928, and they were married until Edgar's death on June 12, 1977 in Reidsville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. Edgar Hill had children Dorothy Ann (Hill) Fuqua, Mary Jane (Hill) Godsey, and Betty Lou (Hill) Yeatts.

In 1908, in the year that Edgar Thomas Hill was born, Henry Ford developed the first Model T automobile, often called the Tin Lizzy or flivver. Produced from 1908 through 1927, it first sold for $850 - which made it affordable for every middle class family. Previously, cars were the province of the upper class and the introduction of the Model T and its availability changed U.S. culture. Within days of its release, over 15,000 cars had been ordered.

In 1943, Edgar was 35 years old when on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.
