Emmelline (Ebbels) Gist of Ballarat, City of Ballarat County, VIC Australia was born in 1886 in Linton to James Spring Ebbels and Emma Jane (Dempsey) Ebbles. She had siblings Harriet Ann Ebbles, Annie Ebbels Hayward, James Spring Ebbels, Ada Florence Ebbels, and John Thomas Ebbels. She married Lewis Gist, and had children Ethel Grace Gist and Clifford Norman Gist. Emmelline Gist died at age 63 years old on June 17, 1950 in Ballarat.

A gift from France, the base for the statue had been built using donations from the American public.
