He had siblings William Henry Ebbels, Elizabeth Jane (Ebbels) Maxwell, Thomas Ebbels, Edward Philpot Ebbels, Frederick Ebbels, and Richard Alfred Ebbels. He married Emma Jane (Dempsey) Ebbles in 1866, and had children John Thomas Ebbels, James Spring Ebbels, Harriet Ann Ebbles, Emmelline Ebbels Gist, Annie Ebbels Hayward, and Ada Florence Ebbels. James Ebbels died at age 63 years old on March 17, 1911 in Linton, VIC Australia.
