Richard Alfred Ebbels of Carlton North, VIC Australia was born in 1859 in Ballarat, City of Ballarat County to John Ebbels and Julia Ann Spring Ford. He had siblings William Henry Ebbels, Elizabeth Jane (Ebbels) Maxwell, Thomas Ebbels, Edward Philpot Ebbels, James Spring Ebbels, and Frederick Ebbels. He married Marianna (Varcoe) Ebbels in 1883, and had children Ethel Mary Ebbels, Julia Maud Ebbels, Emily Beatrice Ebbels, and Alice Lilian Ebbels. Richard Ebbels died at age 83 years old in May 1943 in Carlton North.

In 1859, in the year that Richard Alfred Ebbels was born, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.
