He married Effie (Hardie) Thom, and they were married until death separated them. He had children Elizabeth Jean (Thom) Rocke and Bruce Thom. Eric Thom died on September 22, 1957, and was buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, 600 Princes Hwy, in Springvale, Greater Dandenong City County.
