He had siblings Elizabeth Jane (Letcher) Lovekin, Ada Margaret Letcher, Jessie Letcher, Dr. Herbert Richard Letcher, Esther Mckenzie Letcher, William James Letcher, and John Hosking Letcher. He married Blanche Maude (Peachey) Letcher in 1902, and had a child Marjorie Blanche Elizabeth (Letcher) Swan. Ernest Letcher died at age 73 years old on May 3, 1949 at Dandenong Rd, in St Kilda.

In 1875, in the year that Ernest Albert Letcher was born, on February 18th, the Mason County War, also called the Hoodoo War, began. In central Texas, a German-American mob broke into a jail with a battering ram and lynched two suspected cattle rustlers. Thus began a year of vigilante "justice."

"Mr. President, why not make America safe for democracy?" "Thou shalt not kill." "Pray for the Lady Macbeth's of East St. Louis" and "Give us a chance to live."
