John Hosking Letcher of Fern Australia was born on December 3, 1859 in Ballarat East, City of Ballarat County, VIC to Margaret (Hosking) Letcher and John Letcher. He had siblings Elizabeth Jane (Letcher) Lovekin, Ada Margaret Letcher, Jessie Letcher, Dr. Herbert Richard Letcher, Esther Mckenzie Letcher, William James Letcher, and Ernest Albert Letcher. He married Annie Marie (Dale) Letcher, and had children Ernest John Letcher, Victor Frederick Letcher, and Irene Stella (Letcher) Chapman. John Letcher died at age 45 years old on August 3, 1905 at Rothschild-Chambers Collins St, in Melbourne.

In 1859, in the year that John Hosking Letcher was born, on February 27th, US Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed Philip Barton Key - a US. District Attorney and son of Francis Scott Key, writer of the national anthem, for having an affair with his wife. Sickles claimed temporary insanity - the first to do so - and was acquitted.
