Francis Charles Trawalla"Walter" Kemp 1888 - 1930

Francis Charles Kemp was born on June 18, 1888 in Ballarat, Ballarat City County, VIC Australia to Francis Thomas Kemp and Ellen Mary (Shingler) Kemp, and had siblings Edward Albert Harcourt Kemp, Arthur Phillip Percival Kemp, Ellen Bertha Terang (Kemp) Olson, and Harold Hopetoun Beaumont Kemp. He married Alice Kemp, and had children Ronald Kemp, Mavis Kemp, Percy Kemp, and Gordon Kemp. Francis Kemp died at age 41 years old on February 10, 1930 in Melbourne, and was buried on February 11, 1930 at Coburg Cemetery in Preston, Darebin City County.

In 1888, in the year that Francis Charles Trawalla"Walter" Kemp was born, on July 25th, a court stenographer from Salt Lake City - Frank Edward McGurrin - decisively beat the competition in a typing contest in Ohio. He was supposedly the only person who used touch typing and is believed to have invented the method. Touch typing is ubiquitous now - but Frank's win is what convinced everyone that the method was good!

In 1894, Francis was only 6 years old when on April 21st, a coal miners' strike closed mines throughout the central United States. The Panic of 1893, and the resulting depression, hit coal miners hard and the miners only struck for 8 weeks - they couldn't afford to live without their wages any longer.
