    Lewis, Neale / Newell, Morley, Morrison, were part of the Mi'kmaq peoples' diaspora from Mi'kma'ki in the late 1800s. Frederick James Lewis Jr (Wolf Clan), the son of Eleanor Mary Ann Pitts (Wolf Clan) and Frederick James Sr, married Cape Breton NS 1865 to Mary Ann Morrison (ca 1843 - 1905). They were the parents of at least 13 children, some born Wunamakik (Cape Breton NS) and some born MA. Frederick James Jr died of "tuberculosis of the bowels".

In 1837, in the year that Frederick James Lewis Jr was born, on March 4th, Martin Van Buren was sworn in as the eighth President of the United States. Van Buren won 50.8% of the popular vote over election rival Harrison's 36.6%, largely due to Van Buren's promise to continue (previous) President Jackson's policies. But Van Buren only served one term because of the Panic of 1837 - which was due to Jackson's economic policy.

In 1846, he was just 9 years old when on November 4th, the Donner Party was stranded in the Sierra Nevada on its way to California. The ill-fated wagon train was snowed in and couldn't get out of the mountains for 3 months. Some went for help - on foot - but the majority of the 87 people in the wagon train were stuck in heavy snow, without food. Only 48 of the original settlers survived - some by cannibalism of the dead.
