  • Introduction

ABOUT GEORGE RANSOM LONG b. 1827 in Crawford or Mercer County, Pa. Wife Lucy Powell. 1835-1913 George Ransom Long was listed in the 1880 census of Mercer County, French Creek twp, Pa with his wife, Lucy and 3 children. His brother, John James Long lived in Clifford Twp, Butler County Kansas at that time. In April of 1886, John J. received a letter (in my possession) from George requesting $25 to buy passage to visit him (John J) in Kansas. In an article published in the Peabody, Kansas Gazette/Hearld dated May 6, 1886 states (quote): John J Long of Clifford Township is enjoying a visit from his brother and nephew, who have come from the East to locate in Kansas. This must have been George Ransom and his son, George Cookson Long. In later years, George Ransom's only son, George Cookson Long lived, worked and died in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio and is listed there in several of the Federal Census. The mother, Lucy died in Mansfield at the home of her son there May 27,1913. After the visit to his brother in Kansas in May of 1886 I have found no further record of George Ransom Long. George Ransom did have a brother, Montgomery Long who lived for many years in Otsego, Michigan, but I have found no record that brother George was ever there.
