Hollis Frederick Kroetch's History: 1925 - 1998

  • Introduction

Uncle Fred was an interesting person : born in Washington, he was "adopted" by his Aunt Wea in Whatcom county - his mother's eldest sister -after his mother died. When he was a teenager, and his father remarried, he showed up at his father's house in West Seattle. His stepmother didn't know that her husband had any children (he had 4 - and a few years ago - due to DNA - we found out that there was a 5th half-sibling, conceived between marriages). When Uncle Fred called up his younger brother (my father) and said "I have a good thing going here. Join me", my father showed up. That was too much for the step-mother, their father took them to sign up for the Navy (per their stepmother). It was WW2, their dad signed them up (they were young teens) and they joined and served as teens for most of WW2 After WW2, Dad got a college degree (he hadn't finished high school) and Uncle Fred got a Masters in Math. He spent most of his career (I believe) working in the aeronautics industry. His sister (my aunt) used to joke that she was the only one without a degree or more. That was quite an accomplishment in the 40's and 50's. Uncle Fred loved to joke around. For instance, he said "how am I" when he greeted you. Truthfully, I didn't like that - I was too serious.

Four Kroetch siblings - Elaine, Fred, Frank, and Norma - in 1932 Washington State - aren't they cute?

I might be a bit biased - Frank is my father and today would have been his 90th birthday. I'll always remember you dad

Little Fred Kroetch (pronounced 'crutch') in 1928 Washington state. We really don't know the story behind this photo...were his parents just having fun dressing him up? Or was it Halloween?

He was 3 years old in the picture, and this particular photo has always been a family treasure of ours. Since my grandparents and his siblings (4) are long deceased, we can't ask them why Uncle Fred is smoking a cigar and wearing a hat and suit! 🙁 He did die of lung cancer, but I never saw him smoke a cigar!

Fred had a long, good life even though - as happened often at the time - his mother died when he was 7.
We've started building his biography but still have so much to share about him.
How have I not noticed this photo before?! LOVE it!

His gravesite is not in Ohio. He is buried at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland United States
Hello cousin Amanda! You’re right - I must have put Ohio because that was his last home before he went to live with his brother, my father, in Washington state where he died. Was it Maryland because that’s where Robin had him buried?

Merry Christmas from our family to yours! This is the AncientFaces family in Cupertino CA at Christmas in 1957. Two of the founders were little girls and the Founder and Creator was born decades later. Hope your day is full of love however you gather.
This was a great time for us kids. Uncle Chuck lived with us, Uncle Fred, Aunt Ann, and their children lived nearby in Cupertino, and Aunt Norma and Uncle Bill lived in the adjacent city to us, in Santa Clara. Pam and I couldn't get up Christmas morning until sunrise so when it got light, we'd jump out of bed and get Mom and Dad and Uncle Chuck. Dad would call Aunt Norma and they would come right over. We would be excited and the adults would be bleary eyed. They would begin the day with screwdrivers (!orange juice & vodka) while we opened presents. Then around miday, Uncle Fred and family would come over and we'd eat and party all day 😁😁 Chrstmas was a dawn to after dusk affair and the more people, the merrier. Lots of family and a stream of neighbors dropping by. Uncle Bill came from a small family and he and Aunt Norma didn't have kids. I think he loved the chaos!
