James Hardaway was born in 1828 and died in 1907. He joined Jones Brigade, a division of the famous Stonewall Jackson Brigade. He was in many battles, among them Seven Pines, 2nd Manasses, Gettysburg, Cedar Run, Sharpsburg Bull Run and many others. At one time everyone in his brigade was killed except himself. He went AWOL due to the fact his wife was ill and dying. He did return but was too ill to fight. He then made shoes for the soldiers. He was married first to Catherine Bishop and had 9 children. He then married Catherine Blankenbeckler and had 10 children. He still has many descendants living in Smyth Co.
