His father goes by Jack and it is said he was lost at sea on the voyage to America. He married Sarah Fleming in Amelia Co., VA, went to Nottaway Co. and settled in Smyth co. His son James Hardaway Freeman fought in the civil war and made shoes for the soldiers.
