My Great Grandfather practised medicine in Afton, Iowa. He attended a new-fangled medical school in Philadelphia with his brother Nathan. It was called Electic Medicine. His father was a revolutionary soldier, S. Samuel Lewis 1766-1851 and his mother was Cassandra Le Seur 1772-1851. They married in Harpers Ferry & lived in Virginia, So Carolina in 1806, Paint Lick, Kentucky 1811, Decatur Co, IN in 1822 where he built a log cabin, then they moved to Brighton, Iowa in 1845. James parents are buried in Hillcrest Cemetary, Brighton.

A photo of Walter and James Lewis. Uncle Walter worked as a millwright and carpenter in Nevada City so he did not return to the ranch in Sheridan often. Uncle Jim worked as a Brakeman on the Southern Pacific so he laid over many times and spent time with his brother. Jim is on the left.

So Pacific Brakeman Loses His Life, Jim Lewis: 'I laid over Sunday in the Bluffs & 8pm the yardmaster got killed. I saw him where he got run over. I was talking to him before it happened. Feb 14, 1900: Williams, CA I am getting a little tired of this job & may go back to Sac after awhile.' Sacramento Bee Feb 22: JE Lewis a brakeman was killed by a train at Cottonwood 4pm yesterday. Riding a locomotive, it was necessary for him to turn a switch when struck by the engine tender & thrown upon the track & run over. His funeral will be under the auspices of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Sheridan.
