The following appeared in The Atlanta Constitution on Friday March 4th 2011 and was written by Larry Harstein and Alexis Stevens:
A woman and her two sons have been arrested following shootings in DeKalb County Wednesday that left a 13-year-old dead and a 16-year old critically injured.
The shootings occurred around 2 p.m. in the 2700 block of McAfee Road, off Candler Road near Decatur. Two groups of people who had an ongoing dispute were walking in opposite directions on McAfee Road, when words were exchanged, followed by an argument, police said.
The gunshots were fired from one the groups (sic), police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said. Police identified the 13-year-old victim as Jernard Wheeler. The 16-year old victim remained in critical condition Thursday, Parish said. He was not identified.
Wednesday night, Viola Goodman, 52, and her sons, Shontonious Hawkins, 25, and James Fanning, 20, were arrested after police executed a search warrant on a Willa Way home. They're charged with murder and aggravated assault, and being held without bond.
Police say a 16-year-old, unnamed and arrested Thursday, is believed to have fired the fatal shots.
