Jernard Wheeler's History: 1997 - 2011

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Jernard Wheeler was only 13 years old when he was tragically shot and killed in DeKalb County, Georgia. Jernard was involved in an argument and lost his life during a double shooting that left him dead and another boy critically injured. Four persons were involved in the shooting, including an unnamed sixteen year old, and fifty two year old Viola Goodman with her children - twenty year old James Fanning, and twenty five year old Shontonious Hawkins. It seems that everyone involved had an existing dispute, and a chance encounter led to the incident when the two groups happened to run into each other on McAfee Road off of Candler Road in Atlanta. News articles covering this event are detailed below and can be found at Report: Fourth arrest made in killing of 13-year-old boy, and 4th Person Surrenders In Shooting That Killed 13-Year-Old. An episode (#217) of The First 48 broadcast on July 7th 2011 about this incident is described as: In Dekalb County, Georgia, shots are fired in broad daylight on a residential street, leaving one teenage boy dead and another critically injured. Lead Detective Bruce Brueggeman is shocked to discover that the shooter's mother may have been with him when he pulled the trigger. But forcing the family to give up the suspect is not going to be easy. The four individuals thought to be responsible for the shooting were arrested: Viola; her sons, Shontonious and James, and a 16 year old suspect, and charged with murder and aggravated assault. They were held without bond. The 16 year old had turned himself in. Police thought that he was the actual shooter.

Mother and sons arrested in killing
The following appeared in The Atlanta Constitution on Friday March 4th 2011 and was written by Larry Harstein and Alexis Stevens:

A woman and her two sons have been arrested following shootings in DeKalb County Wednesday that left a 13-year-old dead and a 16-year old critically injured.

The shootings occurred around 2 p.m. in the 2700 block of McAfee Road, off Candler Road near Decatur. Two groups of people who had an ongoing dispute were walking in opposite directions on McAfee Road, when words were exchanged, followed by an argument, police said.

The gunshots were fired from one the groups (sic), police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said. Police identified the 13-year-old victim as Jernard Wheeler. The 16-year old victim remained in critical condition Thursday, Parish said. He was not identified.

Wednesday night, Viola Goodman, 52, and her sons, Shontonious Hawkins, 25, and James Fanning, 20, were arrested after police executed a search warrant on a Willa Way home. They're charged with murder and aggravated assault, and being held without bond.

Police say a 16-year-old, unnamed and arrested Thursday, is believed to have fired the fatal shots.

Report: Fourth arrest made in killing of 13-year-old boy
The following appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution written by Alexis Stevens:

Four people were in custody Thursday after a double shooting left one teen dead and another critically injured in DeKalb County.

Police believe a dispute between two groups of people walking near Decatur led to gunfire Wednesday afternoon on McAfee Road, off Candler Road, police spokeswoman Mekka Parish told the AJC. Thirteen-year-old Jernard Wheeler died after being transported to the hospital and a 16-year-old boy, whose name was not released, remained hospitalized Thursday, police said.

Later Wednesday, officers executed a search warrant at a home on Willa Way before arresting a woman and her two sons. Wednesday night, Viola Goodman, 52, and her sons, Shontonious Hawkins, 25, and James Fanning, 20, were charged with murder and aggravated assault and are being held without bond, Parish said.

Police issued an arrest warrant Thursday for a 16-year-old boy, believed to be the gunman. That teen, whose name was not release, turned himself in Thursday afternoon, Channel 2 Action News reported.

4th Person Surrenders In Shooting That Killed 13-Year-Old
The following appeared on March 3rd 2011 on WSB-TV2 Atlanta:

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.,None — A fourth suspect has surrendered in a shooting that left a 13-year-old boy dead Wednesday afternoon. Three other people have already been arrested and charged in the shooting.

3 Arrested Following Shooting That Killed Teen

Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young said that the fourth suspect is 16 years old.

DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said the shooting was sparked by an argument in a DeKalb County street. Investigators said they received a tip that the perpetrators went inside a house about three or four blocks from where the shooting happened.

Channel 2 Action News cameras were the only ones rolling as police carried out a search warrant at the residence on McAfee Road. The victim's mother grieved over her son, Jernard Wheeler, as the scene unfolded.

"I'm thinking of my child right now," she said.

Parish said another person was injured in the shooting and taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

The other three suspects, James Fanning, 20, Viola Goodman, 52, and Shontonious Hawkins, 25, were charged with murder. Parish said police believe the fourth suspect is responsible for pulling the trigger.
