The number of child and spouse-abuse cases reported up over last year, a Navy official said, but officials attribute that to the disruptions of deployment to the Middle East for Operation Desert Storm. "But we think that has to do with the stress of deployment, and it be an artifact of better reporting," said Lt. Cmdr. John Reibling, family advocacy coordinator for Commander, Naval Base Pearl Harbor. On Monday, authorities believe, Army Sgt. Brian Martin, 37, shot and killed his estranged wife Sun Kum Martin, 31. Brian Martin hanged himself in the police block Wednesday morning. Early Tuesday morning, Navy petty officer Gregory Owens, 24, apparently shot himself in the head aboard his ship in Pearl Harbor. Officials who went to his home found his wife, Yazmin, 19, dead of stab wounds to the abdomen, and his son, Gregory months, dead of head injuries. It is being investigated as a double murder and suicide. Neither Martin nor Owens was deployed to the gulf. 66 Unlike the civilian have never had the need to turn away anybody at our shelter. 99 Lt. Cmdr. John Reibling Family advocacy coordinator Reibling said a check with staff at the Joint Military Family Abuse Shelter indicates that neither Sun Kum Martin nor Yazmin Owens had sought refuge at the center. The shelter, he said, has had an average of 15 women seeking help each month recently. "We haven't detected any discernible increase in the number of cases at this point," Reibling said. "Unlike the civilian community, where folks are being turned away, we have never had the need to turn away anybody at our shelter," he said. If either woman had been seeking help, they should have found it, he added. In event of an emergency, Reibling said clients from all branches of the armed forces can contact the Joint Military Family Abuse Shelter, 24 hours, at 533-7125.
