In 1801, John was only 3 years old when on November 10th, the state of Kentucky outlawed dueling. The oath of office for Kentucky has since said: ""I, being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this State nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God."

In 1830, he was 32 years old when on March 26th, The Book of Mormon was published in Palmyra, New York by Joseph Smith, Jr. The full title was "The Book of Mormon: An Account Written by the Hand of Mormon upon Plates Taken from the Plates of Nephi". According to Smith, the angel Moroni appeared to him when he was 17 and told him where to find golden tablets that told the story of a people who migrated from Jerusalem to the Americas. He transcribed the tablets, which became the Book of Mormon.
