It's International Dog Day!
A beloved and respected member of Roger’s Rangers (who at one point operated out of Fort Stanwix) during the French & Indian War was a rather unique soldier. He held a sergeant’s commission, received pay and full rations, and was considered one of the best soldiers in the company. What makes him unique is that he was a mix of wolf and dog.
Rescued from a cruel French military officer as a puppy by Captain John Stark, Beaubien the wolf dog formed a lifelong bond with Stark and the men of Roger’s Rangers. He learned his duties well. He was an excellent sentry at night, and while on patrol Beaubien would alert the men to snipers or an ambush. At the siege of Louisbourg in 1758, Sergeant Beaubien used his tracking skills to locate seven horses and 20 enemy soldiers. He also participated and is remembered for his exploits at the battle on Snow Shoes, and actions at St. Frances. He was prized for his ability to locate lost rangers and lead them back to camp. Beau or Boo-bear (as he was called by the men) was well known for being fearless in battle.
Because of his loyalty and dedication to the men of the company, he was officially given the rank of Sergeant and his name was added to the muster and payrolls. The British military establishment never realized that this esteemed member of the company was a war dog. He survived the war and lived a long life.
So today, we recognize Sergeant Beaubien as one of the first "Bark Rangers!"
