John Varian Barrow 1876 - 1957

John Varian Barrow was born in 1876 to Charlotte Eleanor (Harris) Barrow and Richard John Barrow, and had siblings Lionel Richard Barrow, Stella Broughton (Barrow) Thomas, Dulcie Eleanor (Barrow) Brabin, Eveline Crystal (Barrow) Brabin, and Lucy Emma Barrow. He married Charlotte Barrow, and they were married until death separated them. He had a child Leila Lucy Dominish. John Barrow died at age 80 years old on June 15, 1957 in Earlwood, Canterbury-Bankstown Council County, NSW Australia.

In 1876, in the year that John Varian Barrow was born, on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."

In 1888, John was merely 12 years old when on January 12th, the 'Schoolhouse Blizzard' blanketed Dakota Territory. Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were hit, leaving 235 dead. Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.
